121 – Who is nearer than your breath and what is love

There are two kinds of love according to Sufi Scriptures. One is material love or earthly love and the other is love for the divine. And this divine love is nearer to you than your breath. For a person who loves God, he is nearer to him than his own mind and soul. Your love for God is what gives you strength and courage to face the difficulties and distress in your life.

Material love is conditional and full of expectations and demands. Spiritual love is devoid of demands and is unconditional. It can be chanting, singing, dancing, praying, meditating or repetition of God’s name, and is performed with faith. God is visible only with love, and when you are in love with God, your eyes are blinded with the light. Your love for God, internalizes your prayers and you are never alone.

Bob Dylan has written these words in a song called “Make you feel my love,” I am only quoting a verse.

“When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.”

Make what you will of it and remember who is nearer than your breath.
