936 – Swami Sivananda’s views on Yoga Sadhana

Our param guru, Swami Sivananda, said that when one performed one’s yoga sadhana one must involve all of one’s faculties. This means practicing with one’s mind and body. This can be accomplished by awareness, visualization and detachment.

Cultivation of awareness can start with being aware of one’s responses, reactions and attitudes for a short time, gradually increasing the time span. Become a witness.

Next concentrate on one’s breathing. Visualize the process of inhalation and exhalation. Then concentrate on counting the breath backwards. One is now involved in breath awareness, breath visualization and breath counting. One is practicing a neutral activity.

All faculties are involved. It is that simple. And now one can proceed on the yogic path.

Our param guru knew all the answers and his words to his disciples were, ‘Sadhana, sadhana, sadhana.’
