953 – Who suffers from poverty?

Poverty results from our lack of relationship with God. All of us who are ignorant of Smaranam (memory of God), are victims of avidya. How can we remove this pall of despair which hangs over us?

Faith in God is like sunlight and our stupidity and vanity disappears. Faith and trust give rise to illumination within us, just as dawn lights the early morning sky. Faith and hope in God will bring spontaneity in our lives. Faith is the basis of spiritual life and it is the ultimate weapon of spiritual life. Our poverty vanishes once we are aware of God’s presence everywhere.

There are five relationships one can have with God. All start with faith and one can cultivates anyone of them, according to one’s personality.

  1. Santa Bhava is having the attitude of the saint and devotee.
  2. Dasya bhava is the attitude of the servant and the master.
  3. Sakhya bhava is the attitude of a friend.
  4. Vatsalya bhava is the attitude of the parent and child.
  5. Madhurya bhava is the attitude of the lover and beloved.

These bhavas enable us to address our spiritual poverty. Spiritual poverty is the lack of sensitivity to the things of the spirit.

How can we be free from spiritual poverty? The answer is in this ancient proverb from the Bible: “Pay your tithes and offerings, first fruit and give to those that are less privileged.”

Pray and study the word of God to know his perfect will for you in all your life’s endeavors. – Psalm 37:23
