Hridaya Kamalam Kolam (lotus in the heart) is a hand drawn yantra for Goddess Lakshmi. Kolams are ancient symbols meant to be sacred welcoming areas for the Hindu deities. Kolam means beauty and are identified by their geometrical patterns, dots, curves and lines often marked by the use of white wheat flour.
The physical aspect of drawing a Kolam involves the act of bending one’s body and head, which is a sign of humility. Spiritually the concentration and calmness while drawing the Kolam is an act of meditation (dhyana).
The sacred Hyrdaya Kamalam is drawn on a Friday. It is only drawn in the puja room or in front of the Tulsi plant. It has a yantra, and Bija mantra Sri at the center. The lotus heart Hridaya Kamalam is drawn at the place of worship to invoke Goddess Lakshmi.
It is believed that spirituality unfolds as the lotus blossoms. The center is drawn first indicating the necessity of being rooted as an individual. The belief behind the drawing of the Kolam is to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity into the home and drive away all negative influences.
Swami Satyananda said that the spiritual heart space is in a particular section in the upper part of the brain. It is very spacious and is known as the Hridaya which means a deeper space. The atman is located in this central heart space of the inner body.
How do we make the lotus to flower in our heart?
We practice atmabhava (love for our fellow beings) and constant self-awareness. We love, serve and give.
