997 – Blade of Grass

Grass is an essential part of our life, and do we take it for granted? Dear ones are you aware that in the process of creation a blade of grass and a Neem tree take the same time.

Every blade of grass has its spot on earth whence it draws its life, its strength; and so is man rooted to the land from which he draws his faith together with his life. – Joseph Conrad

Grass is what saves and holds the water that keeps life good and going… It keeps the falling rain from flushing away. Blades of grass take water from the air and transpired it into the ground. That works the other way around too. Because grass blades help put water back into the air so that rain can fall again. – Theodore Roosevelt

We have a species of grass called Kusha Grass. According to Garuda Purana, this grass is born of the hair of Vishnu. It is believed that it contains the essence of all three of the Triumvirate. It never becomes impure despite its usage. It is used to purify different objects of worship by sprinkling holy water, and using the grass. It absorbs all negative energies. Using a kusha mat for meditation, according to Krishna will benefit the meditator.

I became homesick

When we look at a blade of grass, what thoughts cross our mind? I remember when I visited New York in 1981, I was so startled by the lack of greenery. I was visiting from Chennai (Madras) and there was so much green all around. I became homesick for a blade of grass. I bought a pot of grass. One takes greenery for granted and even more so now.

Do we pause and consider our carbon footsteps? Do we question our ruthless exploitation of mother nature? Do we let the grass grow under our feet. It is an idiom and the answer is we do not. Have you observed how people want to walk on a patch of green grass, even when there is a walk around it? I am not criticizing anyone but why is it not possible to admire the grass. Gaze at the different shades of green and one may see insect life and grass flowers.

I took a picture in Cartagena in a park. It is a little over the top but look at the grass. Of course, the iguana is a handsome fellow, but how well he blends.
