Sri Aurobindo said that true free will belongs only to the Divine. Human will be a limited ego-driven instrument. If we can align individual will with the universal Divine will, we can rise above ego-driven nature and gain genuine freedom.
The key aspects of his view on free will are:
Ego versus Divine Will
Our apparent free will is an illusion of the ego, as it’s typically dominated by past actions and nature’s forces. The only truly free will is the Divine Will.
The Power of Consent
Though nature limits us, the spirit (within us) retains a “power of sanction”—it can choose to consent to or withdraw from the habitual actions dictated by nature.
Aspiration to Freedom
Real freedom is achieved through a „higher spiritual consciousness“, which involves a conscious, constant effort to surrender the ego to the Divine.
Beyond Determination
While the mental and physical world is largely determined by fate (a consequence of past actions), a person can rise above this by connecting to their higher self.
Dear ones, we can work on our will by practicing breath awareness through which we bring our thoughts under control and then we can connect to our higher self. It is a process which requires daily sadhana. This enables us to reinforce our willpower which leads to self-surrender to the Divine will.
