Respect the ancient stories from the forests

Dear ones, in my past blogs, I have been sharing stories about nature from tribal parts of India. Each one of those stories has a moral attached and that is why they are told and retold. We are also able to understand our past.

There are many stories all over the world and some are funny and yet there is an element of truth in them. Take for instance the crow. In Madhya Pradesh amongst the tribals the crow was looked upon as a fore warner alerting farmers about natural disasters. In Tamil Nadu, it is looked upon them as a trickster or a thief. My mother said that when a crow cawed when someone was speaking, it was the truth. Also, when a crow cawed guests were coming.

In Uttar Pradesh it is considered a bad bit of goods. In Maharashtra’s eco sensitive plateau, legends say that one must not enter the forest during certain months. This time coincides with the season of pollination, when the fields are full of flowers. Some of these flowers only once in seven or eight years.

The Centre for Contemporary Folklore in India is responsible for collecting these stories and now we can read them, appreciate and absorb them.

Dear ones, look into the ancient stories in your respective countries, you will be surprised to find how relevant some of them are.
