Smarana—remembrance of the Lord

Repeating the name of the Lord is an invocation of the divinity. Chanting Om Namaha Shivaya or Sri Rama is only a reminder. Divinity is total and comprehensive. It has no form and is universal. God’s name reminds one of purity, divinity and greatness.

Dear ones, ask yourself the questions listed below and then read the answer given by Swami Sivananda.

  • Is it possible for us to remember God every morning and evening single mindedly?
  • Can we feel God’s name on every breath?
  • Can we think about God and do everything for God?
  • How can we become closer to God?
  • How can we feel God in our hearts?
  • Do we feel love for God as we feel pain, pleasure, joy, remorse, hunger and sleep?
  • Now let us ask ourselves, how can we be aware of him, all the time?

Swami Sivananda asked Swami Satyananda, if he remembered God’s name all the time? He replied that he tried his best, but he forgets at times. Swami Sivananda then said that did he forget to eat while he was working? He did not and one has to remember God in every breath because his name is in the breath.
