A story about the creation of tears from Arunachal Pradesh.
Tears are a favourite subject for stories. The express so much and can move us deeply. An Inca myth says that silver came from the tears of the moon and the gold came from the sweat of the sun. In Greek mythology it is believed that pearls were formed from the tears of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. In folktales from Ladakh, it is said that tears of sad fairies were converted into gemstones.
Now we come to a story from Arunachal Pradesh. Once upon a time death did not exist. The elderly endured untold suffering and the young searched for food in an overcrowded earth. King, Raja Kachu decided that he would have to take action. He went into the forest and buried himself alive. His subjects went looking for him and when finally, a persistent subject found him, he had died.
With the death of the king, death was born. A bird and a hornet were weeping at his grave. Thus, tears were born. The subject was moved by their tears and took some of the soil back to his people. Now they had the ability to mourn, weep and die.
Many of us want live forever, keep this in mind that we will be like those people, who never died.
