It was said that half fish half women lived in the Bay of Bengal. They sang out to the fishermen in beautiful voices. It was said that if they treated the mermaids with respect, they would fall asleep and when they opened their eyes next, their nets were full of fish. If they ill-treated the mermaids or were cruel to them, they were never heard of again.
This story has been heard world over. The truth has not been discovered. What is said that sometimes the fishermen are exhausted and feel alone in the deep sea. They are taken in by the vision of a seal.
Maybe the explanation is that it is sometimes a terrifying experience in the sea with the giant waves and huge fish. What does remain is that one must respect the sea as one respects the earth.
Overfishing and throwing toxic garbage into the sea kills the life which has existed for million years in the waters.
