A person steady wisdom.
Sthithaprajna means one whose intelligence is fixed on self-realization or one who is fixed in wisdom. It describes a state of inner calmness, equanimity and detachment from external influences. In the context of the Bhagwad Gita it means one is not affected by the ups and downs of life. One is detached from the fruit of action. One performs one’s duties, only focusing on the action itself.
What are the qualities of a Sthithaprajna?
Contented, not craving for more. Being in the present. Not ruled by one’s emotions. Therefore, being free of anger, greed and negative emotions. Being clear-minded and focused. Not getting distracted. Being true to oneself. Not seeking the approval of others.
How does one become a Sthithaprajna?
I have listed the qualities, dear one for us to cultivate. I realized that what Swami Sivananda said sums it up. ‘Love, serve and give.’
- Perform duties without expecting rewards and this means that you love your tasks.
- Serving the needy and destitute.
- Giving to others without expectation.
Sri Krishna (Gita 6:9) said that one who is of the same mind–to good hearted–to good friend, enemies, the indifferent, the neutral, the hateful, relatives, the righteous and unrighteous–excels.
All living beings are divine souls and hence parts of God. They are viewed as atavist sarva bhuteshu yah pashyati sa panditah. (A true pandit is one who sees everyone as the soul and hence similar to oneself).
Our daily Sadhana will guide and enable us to become Sthithaprajna.
