Walking inside yourself and meeting no one for hours

I have taken Rainer Maria Rilke’s quote as my title. What does it bring to your mind, dear ones?

Make your ego porous. Will is of little importance, complaining is nothing, fame is nothing. Openness, patience, receptivity, solitude is everything.

He believed in solitude. For him, solitude was a fundamental truth. Human beings were fundamentally solitary and trying to escape this was a delusion. Accepting this solitude led to courage and a more profound engagement with one’s own existence. It was important to cultivate this inner solitude which allowed one to remain connected with oneself. Solitude enabled creative and intellectual growth. It was the breeding ground for creativity and acted as an anonymous influence that helped one to develop one’s own inner life and artistic work.

According to him the highest form of love was to be the protector of one another’s solitude. He wrote that one should be unafraid of solitude.

Love your solitude and try to sing out with the pain it causes you. For those who are near you are far away… and this shows that the space around you is beginning to grow vast… be happy about your growth… and be gentle with those who stay behind.

I thought of the witness attitude. Observing the thoughts and emotions as passing clouds, without identifying with them, which breaks the ego’s control.
