1k – Animal and wilderness protection

Soon we will have no animals left and the idioms and proverbs will be difficult to understand.

Wild goose chase.
Can of worms.
The lion’s share.
Take the bull by the horn.
If there were no elephants in the jungle, the buffalo would be a great animal.
Hunger will lead a fox out of the forest.

How many of our children and their children will have seen these animals to understand the idiom or proverb.

Today I saw a photograph of a baby pygmy hippopotamus in the newspaper. It was born in a zoo, and it is the first time that such an event has happened. I took pictures of the photo, and I will include it in my blog. What is upsetting is that people were throwing shellfish at it. This wonderful birth happened in Thailand and the zookeeper wants to make this little one into a special baby.

I have travelled to many parts of the world and have seen little ones with their mothers. In Bali, we saw the Komodo dragons and also infant dragons. Now Komodo island is overrun by tourists. This seems to be happening everywhere. We are not concerned about our carbon footprints, and it really hit me when I saw a penguin which had died of starvation in Punto Tombo (Argentina) and you know why because there is a shortage of krill and sardines.

In Borneo, one saw the Orang Utans. Do you know they require a forest cover which is diminishing, and the forests are being converted to agriculture (palmoil). Poachers poach and take the baby Orang Utans. There is a big market for them. Then we tried to see the pygmy elephants, but their numbers are diminishing rapidly because of the loss of continuous forests. So, it goes on.

I love nature and wherever I am I look out for insects and other animals, like birds, bees, snakes, lizards, and frogs. In India we are fortunate to still see lizards, peacocks, monkeys and some other creatures. Though now the numbers are diminishing. One used to see fireflies in summer and now one barely sees them.

What can we do about it?

Why do we throw things at animals in the zoos? Do we not have any sensitivity left in us?

And always remember: No species protection takes place in zoos. Species conservation only takes place in the wild. We must therefore ensure that the habitats of animals are protected. Don’t give your money to a zoo. Give your money to wilderness protection projects and than enjoy all these wonderful YouTube videos and TV shows about animals. And go outside to find animals in your garden, in the park or in your next forest.

That’s why we have to join hands and save Mother Earth.
