Something about the today Earth Day from a spiritual point of view.

It is written in Tantra, that the state of humankind depends on the number of arms, Durga is portrayed with. It is believed that the world is in the age of Kali Yuga, which means that the present age is full of conflict and evil.

Durga is perceived with twelve to sixteen arms, which combat the tamasic tendencies of humanity. Each of her arms represents an attribute which eliminates a destructive tendency. In order for us to grow spiritually, she will have two arms. Devi will only have two or four arms when we stop committing heinous crimes and become aware of our merciless acts of destruction. Her two or four arms will enable us to change our behavior from rajasic (ego dominated) to sattvic nature and the earth will be granted a new lease of life.

What should we do? We are like grains of sand, but if each one of us practices daily acts of kindness and the prayer for compassion, Durga will grow two arms. And we will save mother earth from wanton destruction.
