- In her upper left hand, she holds a conch which symbolizes happiness and the primordial sound of the universe, “Om.”
- In her lower right hand, she holds a sword which symbolizes the eradication of vices and the destruction of evil.
- In her lower left hand, she holds a bow and arrow which symbolize the energy and the ability to control shakti.
- In her lower left she holds the lotus flower which symbolizes beauty, detachment and liberation.
- In her lower right hand, she holds a club, which symbolizes strength and the power to destroy evil.
- In her lower left hand, she holds the trident which symbolizes the gunas, which exist in all living beings.
- Her fourth lower right hand symbolizes forgiveness and blessings.
- Lastly her hand in Abhaya mudra symbolizes the granting of fearlessness and protection to devotees.
Durga Ma is the Cosmic Mother. She has many forms. In her fierce form as Kali, she destroys demons. In her benign form when she blesses, she is called Mangala. When she is in the mode of creation from herself, she is called Kushmanda. When she gave birth to Kartikey (Skanda), she is called Skanda Mata. She is called Katayani after she slayed Mahishasura.
The Cosmic Mother is worshipped in three forms as the creator, sustainer and destroyer in Navratri.
