I set out to find the wicked but found none. When I searched my own heart, I found no one worse than me.
This couplet emphasizes the importance of introspection and self-reflection.
Kabir was an Indian poet-saint revered by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. His birth was shrouded in mystery. According to one legend, his mother was a Brahmin, who became pregnant after visiting a Hindu shrine. She abandoned him as a baby and he was adopted by a Muslim Weaver. He was strongly influenced by Ramanand Hindu ascetic. He did not believe in repetitious chanting in any faith. He believed in absolute fidelity to Ram and Allah. He wrote songs called Padas and rhymed couplets.
Dear ones, now is the time for us to be self-aware, and self-observant. It is difficult to perceive oneself as one actually is. Therefore, clean the reflection in the mirror and look at yourselves. The divinity is within us and one has to become conscious of it.
