A Jivan Mukta

Only two kinds of people attain self-knowledge: those who are not encumbered at all with learning whose minds are not overcrowded with thoughts borrowed from others; and those who, after studying scriptures and sciences have come to realize that they know nothing. – Ramakrishna Paramhansa

Who attains self-knowledge? A Jivan Mukta.

Who is a Jivan Mukta?

A Jivan Mukta is an absolutely free from egoism, doubt, fear and grief. These are the four important signs that indicate that one has attained perfection.

Ramakrishna Paramhansa had throat cancer and he had immense suffering. He was asked by the doctors as to why he would not have a surgery. His reply was,

I have given my mind to Ma Kalisha how can I think of my body? How can I bring my mind back into the cage of flesh? I am always in bliss.

An ancient sage was asked why he did not perform Sandhya (Vedic ritual) at sunrise, midday, and sunset? He replied that the sun of Knowledge, Jnana Surya was ever shining in the Chidakasha (the core of the spiritual heart, the place where one can access one’s true self) of his heart. There was neither sunrise nor sunset for him. And his old grandmother Maya was dead.

He was a real Jivan Mukta.
