Colors play a very important role in our lives. In the Hindu dharma, colors are deeply symbolic. They represent spiritual, emotional and cosmic qualities rather than mere decoration. Saffron signifies renunciation, fire and purity. Red embodies power, passion, fertility and auspiciousness. White represents peace, knowledge and purity. Blue symbolizes the infinite divine bravery and stability. Yellow denotes learning and wisdom. Black represents the absolute or formless (Nirguna Brahman), as all colors merge into black symbolizing Goddess Kali and the seed stage of creation.

The meaning attached to these colors is complex. Saffron is considered the most sacred color, because it represents fire which burns impurities and is worn by monks and ascetics to signify the renunciation of worldly attachments. Red is used in weddings as it symbolizes purity, fertility and sensuality. It is worn by brides and used for protection and prosperity in the form of Kumkum (red vermillion powder) and bindi. White symbolizes purity and peace and is often worn for meditation. It is also used with mourning and the renunciation of worldly pleasures.

Symbolic form of protection

Blue represents infinite, the sky and the ocean. Gods who fight evil such as Rama and Krishna are depicted with blue skin to signify their divine, limitless nature. Yellow represents knowledge and happiness. It is auspicious and linked to Vishnu and Ganesh. Green is associated with nature, growth and fertility reflecting harmony. Black holds different significance based on specific teachings. It protects one from malevolent spirits and energy. Hindus place a small black dot behind the ears or on the chin as a symbolic form of protection.

Colors play an important part in our lives and we can use them to express ourselves. Dear ones as long we respect Mother Nature and are compassionate, empathetic and aware we will be serene and blessed.
