Dear ones, we are all afraid of fear. Its insidious presence is in everyone and it is very enthusiastic about ruling and controlling us. What can we do about it? Devi Mahatmyam (The glory of the Goddess) answers this question. Fear is addressed in Devi Mahatmyam. One must not be consumed by the ego and a false sense of fear.
Devi Mahatmyam offers protection from fear by promising that those who listen or read the text with devotion will be shielded from enemies and dangers like fires and floods. The reason is that the divine mother acts as a cosmic fortress and shields against worldly threats and inner fears born from human passions and delusions.
Devi says that,
When you hold my story in your heart—I become your shield. Not just in heaven, but right here in your worldly life. – Veda Dhara.
Devi acts as an invisible armour against both external and internal threats that cause fear. Devi acts as a fortress against all malign influences, whether they are enemies, corrupt rulers or elemental dangers. The enemies of Durga in the text symbolize human impulses which are present in an atmosphere of fear and delusion.
