How can I describe myself? Read “Success” and ask yourself these questions. Be truthful.
Success by Ralph Waldo Emerson
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends
To appreciate beauty;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a
Healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier
Because you have lived—
This to have succeeded.
Go through each line and ask yourself:
- Have I laughed often?
- Have I tried to win the respect of others?
- Am I spontaneous with children?
- Have I tried to do my best?
- Have I been able to get over the hurt and harm from so called friends?
- Do I appreciate beauty, see it all around?
- Have I tried to make Mother Earth a happier place?
- By leaving a healthier child, a garden patch and changed social conditions?
- Can I say even one person has breathed easier?
- Because I have lived?
Therefore, dear ones, because I have lived this and therefore, I have succeeded.
