The moon represents balance and equilibrium. The crescent moon on Lord Shiva’s head symbolizes his calm and peaceful nature, balancing his destructive power with serenity. It shows that creation and destruction, light and darkness, are two sides of the same coin.

In the Bhagwad Gita, Krishna refers to the splendor of the moon as part of his divine radiance. This suggests that the brilliance of the moon is not a natural phenomenon but also a reflection of the divine. The Gita states that the radiance of the sun and the brightness of fire, originate from the same divine source.

Purity and subtle

Swami Satyananda associates the moon with the mind, emotions and consciousness, viewing it as having a powerful influence on the individual. He equates the moon with the divine feminine principle, motherhood, and the force of creation (prakriti). While the sun (Surya) is associated with the soul (Prakriti). The moon is associated with purity (sattva) and the subtle body, and its light is linked to the divine as in Upanishadic saying: When the moon shines, Brahman shines.
