Oh dear, it is the truth

Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates past from future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without anyone of us, and if our ego permit us to confess, they could eternally in our absence. – Maya Angelou

I came across this quote and it is absolutely authentic. We imagine that we are indispensable and we will be missed by our loved ones, family, colleagues and friends. We sense their loss. However, if we examine our ego and reign it in, we are dispensable, replaceable and forgettable. This is the harsh actuality.

It hurts but it is the unspoken verity. The Buddha describes the ego as an illusion (anatta or non-self). It is a false sense of one self which drives suffering by attaching one to fleeting thoughts, sensations and desires.

Let us practice reflection and Atmabhava.
