What happens when we utter words?
Love is a complex emotion. It brings up feelings which make one feel good. Saying it aloud one feels something. What is that something? A sense of passion, cherishing, attachment, tenderness and it is a warm emotion in one’s heart space.
Hate is ruled by the intensity and the specific emotion one wants to convey. The words for it are detest, loathe, abhor and many more. Think of hate? What does it do to you? Even when you express it, you screw up your face. You frown and some changes happen in your system.
Think of kind. To be kind is to be compassionate and generous. When you are kind and caring, again you have a good feeling.
Think of mean. Mean is when one is malicious, ill-tempered or vicious. How does it feel when you are in this frame of mind? You may feel unpleasant and have a sense of abhorrence.
Think of delight or pleasure. When one is delighted then one is in a state of energetic happiness.
Think of anger. Anger is expressing rage, fury or wrath. How does it feel to express rage? What does it do to us? It can be cold rage, hot rage or suppressed rage. It plays with our feelings and makes us vulnerable. We think we are invulnerable when we experience it. However, it harms us and sometimes we are unaware that we are in this state.
The point of view
Words are very powerful and when we experience these feelings and emotions, we are being affected. One should try to neutralize one’s emotions and address the situation from a proactive point of view. It is not easy but negative feelings can distort our perspective and furthermore reinforce our pessimism.
We need to constantly clean the mirror of one’s mind. This mirror can become dark and gloomy. We can be in state of constant anger and it can make our perception of everything as being fatalistic and us being powerless. Therefore, we must become self-aware and reflective.
A wonderful description is given in the opening lines of Hanuman Chalisa.
Having cleaned the mirror of my mind with the dust from the lotus feet of the Sri Gurudeva, I sing the pure glories of Lord Ramchandra.
The mirror represents the human mind. Just as a dirty mirror cannot form a clear reflection, an ego-driven cluttered mind cannot perceive truth, inner peace or wisdom.
