Ramana Maharshi’s wise words

Fasting should be chiefly mental. Mere abstinence from food will do no good, it will even upset the mind. Spiritual unfoldment will come rather by regulating eating. What is the purpose of fasting? When fasting, one’s senses become subdued. Then the mind becomes non vacillating. The most important thing is to control the mind. Where is the mind? Where is the body? Where is the Jiva? It is all in the self. Food does not make up one’s thoughts. The very fasting of determinations, doubts and thoughts alone would control the mind. If one understands the self all food controls are unnecessary. – Ramana Maharshi

In April 1947, Ramana Maharshi was presented a white peacock. He was not keen to accept the gift as he felt that there would be quarrel between the blue peacocks which were already residents in the ashram. The white peacock was a bird, which liked to explore his surroundings. Ramana would scold him, when he was found and tell him that he must not step out of the ashram. He could get hurt outside. The peacock listened to him and he would wander around the ashram.

One day the radio was playing a chant. The peacock sat by the side of the radio, with his eyes closed. The other devotees were enchanted seeing the peacock swaying to the sound. Ramana said that peacocks loves the music when it had a flute playing. Another time a disciple composed a song based on the white peacock. It was called the Mayura Vritta. Ramana asked her to sing it and as soon as she started her song, the white peacock came and he started dancing. When she ended her song, the peacock nipped her instrument and Ramana asked her to sing the song again.

Ramana was a gentle, simple and pure soul. His spiritual radiance emanated from him and he was loved by people and animals.
