Small tasks

And indeed, what little of beauty and peace is to be found in the societies of men is owing to the daily performance of small duties, not to big doings and fine talk. – Rabindra Nath Tagore

What are the small tasks we perform daily?

  • Listening to chants.
  • Saying our prayers.
  • Watering the plants.
  • Feeding the pets.
  • Feeding the birds, wild cats and dogs.
  • Helping someone.
  • Cooking.
  • Being kind.
  • Being positive.
  • Being thankful.

What are the big tasks?

I do not have to describe them, as we know what exactly what they are.

What is this great philosopher, Rabindra Nath Tagore writing about? He is referring to karma yoga, and how we should address our tasks in our daily life. Each little activity is of importance and if we perceive whatever task we do, with a smile we will find that our day is full of bliss.

I remember, when I was a schoolgirl, I travelled by public transport. The bus conductor always had a big smile for all of the passengers. He would blow his whistle to stop the bus if he saw us running for the bus. We looked out for him, my sister and I as he was so joyous.

I am sure each of you can remember someone like this and we come across such persons almost daily.
