The Maya tree sprouts out of the seed from the vrittis (modification) of the mind. In the soil of enjoyments of the world, attachment, and desire water the Maya tree of illusion. Karmas are the fruits while lust, anger and greed are its sprouts.
Sattva, rajas and tamas, are its buds, the senses are its twigs and ego is the mighty trunk. Attraction and repulsion are the two main branches and the various sensual and materialistic objects are the leaves.
Under the influence of the three gunas, the soul is misled by matter and subsequently entrapped. This is Maya (illusion). Escape from Maya is only possible through the sattvic path of wisdom. And then the soul is free from the clutches of Maya and heads toward liberation.
