984 – Why is Friday an auspicious day for Hindus?

Friday is the auspicious day for the major Goddesses such as Lakshmi, Parvati and Saraswati. It is considered a day of feminine Shakti. Sukra, is the Sanskrit word for brightness and clearness. It is the name of the son of Bhrigu and Khyati (incarnation of Lakshmi) and the preceptor of the Daityas (Devas) and the Guru of the Asuras.

He is also identified with the planet Venus, one of the Navagraha’s (Navagraha’s are the nine celestial planets and gods which influence one’s life). His mount is either a crocodile, camel or, horse. He holds a stick, a lotus, and a bow. He is the grandson of Brahma, and was blessed by Shiva after performing a severe penance and he was given the Sanjivani mantra, which resurrects the dead.

Therefore, pleasing the Goddesses, is an essential part of the Shukravaar puja. Lakshmi being Shukra’s mother is worshipped. She grants prosperity and peace. Parvati is worshipped as Shiva was Shukra’s Guru. Parvati is known as the mother goddess and Adi Shakti. White is also worn for her. Saraswati is also worshipped on Friday; one can wear white or yellow for her. She is the goddess for fine arts and learning.

On Friday, one can start new ventures and be certain that one will receive the blessings of the Divine Goddesses and Shukra.
