The concept of Hinduism is Dharma. One of the attributes of dharma is protecting the environment. We must practice pro-environmental behavior. Pro-environmental behavior is the actions we take in daily life to protect the environment. There are three levels here, willingness to act, daily protection activities and efforts to bring about public change. Since our environment is composed of earth, water, fire, air and ether. We have to make sure that our earth is not exploited, our water is drinkable and our air is breathable.
If we all prayed every night as we were taught to do so, we can apply the word, ‘umwelt”. Why am I using it? I learnt the word today and it has such powerful meaning. It is used to describe the way an organism experiences the world, which is based on what it’s sensory organs and perceptual systems can detect and interpret. It is also interpreted as a self-centered world. Each one of us has a different environment because no one is alike.
Do you see the connection?
If we offer prayers every night and are thankful for what is given to us, we are contributing to the change in our environment. We are consciously removing negativity which exists in all of us. Therefore, our environment becomes healthy, even though each one of us has a different umwelt.
Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good. – Maya Angelou
