Happiness

Dear Ones, I have to share two joyful events with you. We had a shrew in our garden yesterday and she was eating Meeow, the cat food. Sighting a shrew in India is considered very auspicious for Hindus. The shrew is considered a Goddess and is associated with Lakshmi. When a shrew crosses your path or is in your house, it means that all your problems will be resolved. The shrew represents fertility, prosperity and wealth.

The next happy event is what I read in the newspaper today. In a remote village in Assam, four elephants and a calf walked into a deep pond. The elephants were trumpeting with frustration and the little one was howling. The villagers heard the terrifying sounds. If you have heard an elephant trumpeting and its little one shrieking, you would be unnerved.

We underwent this experience in Krueger Park in South Africa. The calf just was playing the fool, but the Mama raced towards us. We were in an open-air Jeep and our guide and driver had to speed away.

Well, when the villagers approached the pond and saw the exhausted elephants trying to scramble out. They realized that they would have to do something immediately. The calf was drained of energy. They brought all their farming implements and the entire village started making a makeshift path along the pond’s edge. It was six in the evening. An excavator would take too long to arrive. By ten pm, the path was ready. The calf scrambled up and the elephants followed one by one.

There was total silence and then the elephants stood still for a while and looked at the people. They left walking slowly into the forest.
