Yantras are geometrical formations such as the triangles seen in the chakras. There are many yantras like Kali Yantra and Tara Yantra, but the greatest is the Sri Yantra. The purpose of the yantra is to create a specific formation in the mind.
Just as a child has to learn the alphabet in school, so the mind has to be conditioned to visualize a yantra. One starts by gazing at a point. In Tantra it is believed that the point is the bindu, the source of all perceptions. From bindu, the entire cosmos has come into existence. The manifestation starts in the bindu and then is reversed back into the bindu. Bindu is one’s own mind, and when one can visualize it then one’s mind has assumed the power of manifestation.
Now one will be able to see a triangle. This triangle is visualized in two positions, one pointing upwards and the other pointing downwards. If one can visualize the two triangles separately, then one must try to see them intersecting each other. When this is possible then one’s mind becomes capable of greater manifestations.
The bindu is the mind in manifestation. The triangle is a more advanced manifestation of the mind. Then one’s intuitive mind develops and through the practice of the perception of the yantra. The mind becomes force, a creator.
As explained by Swami Satyananda Saraswati.
Dear ones, this is one of the simplest explanations of yantras.
