The virtues of yellow

Yellow is the brightest color in the visual spectrum. It is a favored color and what are the reasons for it. The sun is yellow and sunlight loved by all is golden yellow. It is the easiest color to imagine, it represents happiness and hope.

Vishnu and Krishna are linked with yellow as is Saraswati. It is correlated with freedom and divine nature. Yellow is the color of the sacred text, the Vedas. Yellow stimulates mental processes, encourages communication, strains the eyes but increases cheerfulness. It represents optimism, youthfulness and clarity.

Not all shades of yellow have the same effects: bright yellow is indicated as an aid to freeing the mind, cream yellow stimulates the generation of ideas and golden yellow is associated with curiosity, passion and research. Yellow is reminiscent of the sun, which is vital for life and growth. It symbolizes the harvest and the blessings of nature. When it is a pallid hue, then it represents illness.

A great deal of yellow is used in Pujas. Devotees may wear yellow, while praying. Yellow sweets, fruits and flowers are offered. The prasad offered is often yellow. When festivals are celebrated, yellow food, fruits and vegetables are cooked like pumpkin, jackfruit, etc. with turmeric. Many of the vegetables and fruits are associated with the Gods.

Gold is also yellow and it symbolizes wealth, purity and divine blessings. Lakshmi is offered gold and it is considered a very sacred offering. Gold is revered as it never tarnishes and represents the sun.

There are many associations with Yellow in Hinduism. It symbolizes chastity and sensuality, and unmarried girls wear yellow. Some tribes believe that the color yellow has the power to keep evil spirits away.
