993 – How to get the better of Karma?

Everyone uses the word karma freely, flippantly and frankly. What does Karma mean? It means that every emotion, thought and action have a consequence.

Sri Yukteswar

The vanished lives of all are filled with many shames. Therefore, do not judge.

Beings with unredeemed earthly karma are not permitted after astral death to go to the high causal sphere of cosmic ideas but must shuttle to and fro from the physical and astral worlds.

This is extremely grim and how can one remedy the situation? Again, to quote Sri Yukteswar, ‘one’s past lives are dark with many shames. Everything in the future can improve if one takes the correct steps.’

Every thought generates the seed of karma. If one is rude to someone, often it generates an angrier response. There is always a consequence of one’s actions. What does one learn from this? Do not act in an irresponsible and self-serving way.

How does one become aware of one’s misbehavior? One must become self-observant and a witness. One must hold oneself accountable for one’s deeds.

Serve others and overcome karma. Put your energy into unconditional service. Cease to think about yourself and only think how your task will benefit others. Self-involvement leads to not accepting criticism. So, ignore yourself and focus on doing your best.

How to become free of one’s ego? Practice Samvrit pranayama, it leads to balance of the pranas. When that happens, one becomes free from fear and doubt.

Samvrit Pranayama Practice

Inhale to the count of 5
Pause to the count of 5
Exhale to the count of 5
Pause to the count of 5.
54 times, counting backwards, make no mistakes. You can add your personal mantra or So Ham or Aum.

What happens? Daily practice will lead to reduction of self-pity and hostility. One will be motivated to become detached and self-aware. Balancing of the pranas, leads to banishment of negative thoughts and then one can practice meditation.

Last but not least, when Swami Kriya Nanda was asked the difference between good and bad karma, he said good karma takes one closer to God and bad karma distances one from him.

Dear ones, always keep in mind what Swami Sivananda said, love, serve and give. If we can even follow this wisdom even a little, we will be on a karma free path.
