By Swami Sivananda Saraswati.
To transmute the brutal instinct and to become divine is the goal of life. If you control anger, eradicate selfishness and develop tolerance, compassion, selflessness, generosity, courage, forgiveness, you will become divine.
Is selfishness good? No, become selfless.
Is greediness good? Is anger good? Is lust good? Is vanity good? These form the lower nature of man.
So, remove these and become selfless, generous, patient, tolerant, pure and humble.
This is the goal. How do we accomplish the goal? We develop.
Breath awareness. Visualize the breath. Count the breath.
The practice is to be aware of one’s breath. Be conscious of the inhalation and exhalation. Then visualize the breath flowing in through both nostrils and coming out of both nostrils. Now count the breath backwards from 54 to 0. No errors. In this time, you will have switched off yourself and your reactions. When you do this, you are gradually becoming self-aware.
Nothing will happen in a day, but your self-awareness will enable you to become neutral in your thoughts.
Recommendation: Practice several times in the day.
