Characteristics of a holy man, sage or sadhu

The Uddhava Gita is also called the Last Message of Shri Krishna. Krishna described in this scripture, the attributes which make a person, a sage, sadhu or holy man.

Compassionate, bearing no enmity to any creature.
Always truthful and behaves in a serene manner in all circumstances to all persons.
Intellect is not ruled by desires and having full control of the senses.
Not being possessive about anything.
Following a balanced and measured diet.
Being steady in the sadhana and looking upon him as his refuge.
Being always alert, never distracted.
Mastering the six-fold evils—hunger, thirst, grief and infatuation, decay and death.
Giving honour to others, never seeking the limelight.
Friendly to those who are happy.
Merciful to those who are in misery.
Illuminated by these virtues. – Chapter VI, verse 29—34.

Then he described the person, who transcends the virtues, duties and responsibilities to pursue spontaneous selfless love. Such an individual even gives up these practices as sanctioned by Krishna himself. He is the best of the sages. His worship is undiluted. He elaborates that a person, who worships him with humble piety, is the best devotee.

Bhakti here is a form of devotion, which remains when one is beyond both knowledge and ignorance as quoted by Ramakrishna Parmahans.
