Uma is also known as Parvati. She represents the divine light, devotion and cosmic energy. Uma is also the divine feminine energy inherent in nature.
A powerful prayer to her,
“Om Um Umaadevibhyaam Namah.”
Pronunciation is “Ohm Oom Oo-mah-deh-vee byahm Nahmah”.
Meaning is ‚I bow and seek the blessings of Goddess Uma, the Divine Mother‘. It is chanted to remove fear, anxiety and sluggishness. It helps invoke clarity and positive energy into one’s daily life.
Uma is an incarnation of Mother Goddess Shakti. After her previous avatar as Sati, where she immolated herself and Shiva retreated into deep mourning, she was born as Uma, the exquisite daughter of Hamadan (Himalayas) and Queen Mena. She practiced a severe penance to marry Shiva, the ascetic. She starved herself and Shiva decided to test her penance. He appeared in the form of a Brahmin, who criticized Shiva. Uma defended Shiva’s reputation fiercely. Shiva finding that she loved him so much, revealed his true form and accepted her as his wife.
In Kena Upanishad, Uma is the ultimate spiritual guide. When the Devas defeated the demons, they believed that the victory was because of their supernatural power. A magnificent spirit (Brahman) appeared before them to teach them humility but they were bursting with their arrogance and they did not recognize him. Then Uma appeared in her celestial glory and revealed to them that the spirit was Brahman and they were just instruments of his cosmic power.
