First of all, let us define rudeness. Rudeness is described as a weak imitation of strength. So many of us practice rudeness. It is also described as behavior which is inappropriate. It is being insolent, discourteous, impertinent and impolite.
How does on respond to it? One has to remain calm, polite and assertive. As a Yogi, what should one do? Let us remember what the Buddha said.
The Buddha would respond with calmness, non-reaction and refuse to accept the negativity directed towards him. He would deflect the insult back to the insulter and allow them to be burdened by their anger. He would also ask a gentle question which would enable the person to reflect on his/her behavior.
The key points to remember from Buddha’s responses:
- Non-attachment: Not to take the rudeness and insults personally.
- Compassion: The Buddha only showed compassion to the insulter.
- Mindfulness: Being a witness and not getting entrapped in the responses.
Buddha answered the people, who were throwing stones and insults at him.
You are rude and hostile to me. You can throw a burning torch into the river. It remains fire until it touches the water. The moment it touches the river, it cools down. I am that river. You throw torches at me. I accept the fire. It goes out, when it touches me. I am not hurt, because I have no ego. My ego has departed.
How do we emulate the Buddha?
We practice self-awareness and self-reflection. It is a slow process, with the daily sadhana we continue on the path.
