The story is narrated in Devi Mahatyma of Skanda Purana. Durga was created with the combined energies of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and other Gods. After she was created, the Gods gave her a variety of weapons and other ornaments. And she was gifted a lion.
Shiva drew a trishul from his own trident.
Vishnu brought forth a discus from his own discus.
Varuna, lord of the waters gifted her a conch and a noose.
Agni gave a spear.
Maruta gave a bow and a quiver of arrows.
Indra brought forth a thunderbolt out of his own thunderbolt, and a bell from his elephant Airavarta.
Yama gave her a staff from his own staff of Death.
Brahma gifted her a string of beads and a water pot.
Surya bestowed his own rays on her entire skin.
Kala gave a shining sword and shield.
Jewels, ornaments and weapons
The milk ocean gave a pure necklace, a pair of undecaying garments, a divine crest- jewel, a pair of earrings, bracelets, a brilliant half-moon (ornament), armlets on all arms, a pair of shining anklets, a unique necklace, and ring for all the fingers.
Vishwakarma gave her a very powerful axe, impenetrable armor and other weapons which would only defeat and crush.
The ocean gave her a garland of unfading lotuses for her head and neck. An unfading exquisite lotus for her hand.
Kubera gave her a wine cup, which would never empty.
Shesha Nag, the lord of the serpents gave her a serpent necklace, bedecked with jewels.
She was further honored by the other Devas with ornaments and weapons.
Ma Durga roared with a death defying laugh again and again. The roar reverberated throughout the universe. The worlds and the seas shook and trembled.
It was Himavat, Parvati’s father who gave Durga a lion.
Dear ones, visualize this form of Ma Durga and all your fears will flee.
