Panchmukhi Gayatri is depicted with five faces, each symbolizing a dimension of divine consciousness, the five elements, the five pranas, and the Gayatri mantra’s spiritual layers. The faces are in five different colors. The Gayatri Dhyana Shloka describes the colors as Pearl (white), Coral (red or orange), Gold (yellow or golden), Blue (sapphire), Dhavala (white, luminous).
Each of the colors has a different meaning:
- Pearl – purity, truth. Symbol of purity (Shuddhi) and truth (satya) and ether
- Red – devotion, tapas
- Gold – knowledge, illumination
- Blue – space, depth, protection
- White – bliss, divine light
Pearl represents the Sattva Guna.
Red represents discipline, and burns away karmic impurities.
Gold represents divine knowledge.
Blue represents meditative awareness and divine protection.
Dhaval represents bliss.
Why meditate on her five faces?
Gayatri is considered as Panchmukhi and this means that the entire universe is made up of the five elements (tattvas) and all creatures of the world are made up of these five elements. Gayatri’s five faces symbolize the five pranas, five elements, and five koshas. Her fivefold form is a complete representation of the body, breath, mind, intellect and spiritual bliss.
She exists as a life force within every living being on earth and this is the reason the Gayatri mantra is considered the basis of all powers.
Her worship is believed to lead to spiritual enlightenment and liberation.
