580 – Ether and the power of speech

The Latin root of Ether is aether, which means, “the upper, pure, bright air.” Ether was described as a substance that was said to fill all space and make up all bodies. Ether is the fifth and highest element after air, fire, water and earth. It is believed to be the substance composing all heavenly bodies.

It is ether which is connected to sound and through it sound passes. Ether gives shabda (sound) its primordial and unmanifested form. Sound and voice are its components. In this context we must examine the quote by Swami Vivekananda.

Think of the power of words. They are a great force in higher philosophy as well as in common life. Day and night we manipulate this force without thought and without enquiry. To know the nature of this force and to use it well is also a part of Karma yoga.

The secret of Karma Yoga is to combine deep interest with perfect detachment. Correct choice of words have the ability to create self-awareness in us and enable us to become what we believe, and not what we think or what we want as described in the Gita.

Of all the creatures on this planet, only humans have the ability to communicate through the spoken word. The power to use words is a unique and powerful gift from God. – Proverbs 18:21; Ephesians 4:29.

Words never leave the Ether, they increase our load of samskaras. Breathing deeply, pausing after inhalation, long exhalation and pausing after exhalation will lead to thinking before speaking will enable one to lead a harmonious life.
