Who are they?
Adi Shesh is the thousand headed being, and Vishnu rests under his hoods.
Vasuki swallowed part of the toxic poison, which emerged when he was used for churning of the ocean. Shiva wears him round his neck. He is associated with eternal life.
Kaliya represents our five vices and Krishna killed him.
Adi Shesh or Shesh Nag is the thousand headed snake. Close your eyes and try to visualize this magnificent being. He is said to represent Kal Purush or eternal time. He sustains the world at the time of Mahapralay, the great dissolution, so that new creation can take place. He embodies the Maha Kundalini shakti, the great serpent power that keeps existence wrapped in its fold. In human beings this power is rolled up in three and a half coils at Mooladhara chakra. It is dormant until it is awakened. Then it rises and reaches Sahasrara. Adi Shesha holds the entire universe in his hoods.
The most toxic poison in the universe
In Hinduism, it is believed that Sahasrara is the abode of Shiva and Mooladhara is the abode of Shakti. Shiva is Sarvabhutatma, the, the, the self of all beings. No snake will ever bite him. He wears the thin, long writhing Vasuki snake as a necklace. Vasuki rules the underworld (patal). His help was sought when the churning of the oceans happened. Vasuki, is the king of the Nagas and he is described as having a gem called Nagmani on his head. Shiva rewarded Vasuki who consumed halala, the most toxic poison in the universe, by wearing Vasuki. Vasuki considers himself lifeless without Shiva. Shiva has controlled all the desires and no evil can come to those who worship Shiva.
Now let us understand this phenomenon. The power of Brahman works in Ananta, the upward current and Vasuki is the downward poisonous snake. Krishna in the Gita says that he is Vasuki among the serpents and Anant, among the Nagas. Anant is also a symbol of Prakriti (nature) and of the five elements. The earth is comprised of the five elements, earth, water, fire, air and water. Earth is supported by The Adi Sheshha and Vishnu with Lakshmi rests under his majestic hood. Vishnu reclines on the Shesh Nag because he supports the entire universe and Vishnu is the preserver. Vishnu’s mount, Garuda symbolizes the human spirit that tames the five vices—lust, anger, greed, infatuation and pride. The five vices are represented by Kaliya. Kaliya was killed by Krishna.
I have described Shesh Nag, Vasuki and Kaliya to you. Shesh Nag supports the universe, Vasuki saved the universe in the churning of the ocean and Kaliya represents our five vices, which can destroy the universe.
