Hanuman, the God of Prana

Hanuman was the son of the Vayu, God of the Wind. His mother, Anjane was a beautiful celestial nymph, who had been cursed to be born on earth as a monkey princess, because she was an impetuous maiden by Brihaspati’s wrath. Brihaspati was the guru of the Devas. Her curse would only be uplifted when she would bear a child. Anjane was seen by the Wind God and despite being a monkey, she was very beautiful. He was enchanted by her and he blew on her. Hanuman was born and she was freed of the curse.

Hanuman, on other hand did not know that he had the powers of a God. He was a playful child and he enjoyed spoiling the pujas of the sages. He would eat the offerings before they were offered. So, the hermits and sages were very angry and they cast a spell on him. He would only know about his powers, when Ram came to earth as a mortal. Ram was Vishnu’s avatar.

Hanuman and the Sun

It is a complicated story. One day, Hanuman decided to swallow the Sun, because he imagined that it was a fruit. The heavens were in a state of panic and Indra hit him, with his thunderbolt on the chin. Hanuman fell into a swoon. His mother was heartbroken and Vayu stopped blowing. The result was that all activity on earth stopped. There was desperation as nothing was growing, flowering or fruiting. The Devas went to Brahma and begged him to do something. Hanuman was gifted super powers and he would be the protector of anyone, who prayed to him. The heavens and earth came back to normal. It was also said that Hanuman would live as long people chanted Rama’s name.

Ram was born to destroy Ravan, the evil Asura, who could only be killed by a mortal. Sita was Lakshmi’s incarnation and she was Ram’s wife. The story is given in the Ramayana and Ram was banished to the forest for fourteen years of exile. The kingdom of Ayodhya was in turmoil as the populace and Ram’s brothers were heart broken when Ram was sent into Vanvaas (living in the Forest). Sita and his brother accompanied him. They were happy living their simple life. However, Ravan had a glimpse of Sita and he abducted her. Ram was grief stricken and both he and his brother, Lakshman went in search of Sita. In the meanwhile, in the forest, the bear king and the others were also distressed and they told Hanuman that he must help Ram. Hanuman replied that what skills did he have. So, the bear king said that he should go to Ram.

Hanuman and the mountain

Hanuman went to see Ram and when he saw him his heart was filled with joy and love. He fell at his feet and asked what he could do. It was then Hanuman realized that he was gifted. He flew across the ocean to Sri Lanka where Sita was in Asoka Vatika (garden) in the kingdom of Ravan. He also performed many feats thereafter. He carried a mountain in the palm of his hand, as the mountain had life giving herbs on it to save Lakshman.

Hanuman’s prana was awakened when he fell at Ram’s feet. It was his will, which came into force. Hanuman opened his heart and there were Ram and Sita in his heart space.

Dear ones, pray to Hanuman, the God of Prana for awakening of your prana.

Practice breath awareness and you will balance your prana.
