Birthday of the Bhagwad Gita

I love the idea of the Bhagwad Gita’s Birthday. It is a beautiful celebration as we work on ourselves and offer prayers to Krishna and Lakshmi. The birthday of the Gita is known as Gita Jayanti. It is celebrated on the 11th day of the waxing of the moon in the Margashirsha Shukla Ekdashi. In the lunar calendar it either begins on the new moon or the full moon. It corresponds to the ninth month of the lunar year. It is considered the most sacred month in Hindu faith.

It honours Lakshmi and Krishna. This is the day when Lord Krishna revealed the sacred teachings of the Bhagwad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It is also the celebration of Mokshada Ekadashi, which is a day of liberation and spiritual enlightenment. It falls in November—December. The aim is to appease Lakshmi and seek her abundant blessings and to seek Krishna’s blessings.

How is it observed?

Daily prayers, pujas and other devotional practices to invoke inner peace and well-being. Ancestor worship which showers wellbeing and a blessed ongoing life. Mokshada Ekadashi fast is observed in the same period and it is believed to cleanse the soul of all sins. The main focus is on devotion and self-discipline achieved through fasting and sincere prayers. On this day gifting a Bhagwad Gita is considered a very auspicious act. Being involved with charitable acts and kindness increases one’s merits.

Dear ones, if we follow what Swami Sivananda said and make it part of our life, we will be on the path of liberation.

Love, serve and give and practice Atmabhava.
