Bowing and touching the feet of the Deity

When one touches the deities’ feet, one is not just offering reverence one is saying, “I leave my burdens here. I offer my ignorance. I ask to walk your path.”

Your learning’s idle, incomplete
If you have not placed it at that source’s feet. – Tiruvalluvar, The Tirukurral, translated by Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

In Bhagwat Purana, the feet are called the Padaravindam (lotus feet) which are:

The final resting place of all wondering souls
The shelter that removes fear
The gateway to liberation (moksha).

In Vaishnava tradition, even the sandals (padukas) of Vishnu and Rama are worshipped because they carry the dust of the Lord’s path.

In Shaiva temples, the linga Abhishek starts by pouring water or milk over the base symbolically bathing Shiva’s feet.

In Shakta temples, the feet of the Goddess are known Shakta Padma, the very earth of divine energy.

Placing one’s learning at the feet of the Guru, is abject humility. It is described as the devotee’s complete surrender and sense of being lesser, acknowledging the Guru’s higher spiritual status. The feet represent the ground from which learning begins and the foundation of a wise person’s capabilities, embodying the Guru’s knowledge and path.

It’s believed that the Guru’s blessings, spiritual power and positive energy flow from their feet and touching them allows the devotee to receive these gifts. The Guru’s feet symbolize the transcendent state and touching them is a way to connect with the divine essence (Atman) within the Guru. It also represents honor and gratitude which honors the Guru’s sacrifices, life experiences, and unconditional love, valuing the wisdom they impart.

Swami Satyananda said that whenever he spoke, he visualized his Guru’s feet in slippers on his head. And Swami Sivananda had very big feet! Dear ones, this is my comment about the feet.

Lastly when one bows to the feet of the deity during darshan, it is symbolic of surrender and acknowledging the Divine as one’s highest refuge and guide.
