Penance

The Hindu path of penance is a way of self-improvement and spiritual growth involving self-discipline, atonement and a sincere effort to connect with the divine.

Several internal flames have to be lit for the sadhana of penance.

First flame to be kindled is for not being restless. Restless means distracted and constantly pursuing desires and trivialities in life. This flame then continues to burn and the impurities of this life vanish.

The second flame to be kindled is for worship of God, wise men/women, and one’s own teachers.

The third flame to be kindled is for following their teachings and to the practice of straightforwardness, continence and non-violence.

The fourth flame to be kindled is for purifying speech. We learn to speak the truth, to be non-judgmental. We read and study the scriptures.

The fifth flame to be kindled is for remaining cheerful, having clarity of the mind, learning silence, self-control and pure ideals. These are attributes of mental penance.

The true meaning of penance is that we purify ourselves both mentally and physically, and to gain spiritual insight. It is a way to express devotion to God, seek blessings and ultimately attain liberation.

Simple ways to practice penance

  • Meditation
  • Chanting mantras
  • Repentance and acknowledging one’s mistakes.

Dear ones, we can all start to practice penance by being aware of our breath, understanding pratyahara and then exercising the discipline of daily sadhana.
